A Simple Guide to Enjoying This Energizing Drink

Brewing yerba mate is a ritual enjoyed for centuries across South America, and now it's gaining popularity around the world for its unique flavor and energizing properties. If you're curious about how to make this earthy, aromatic drink at home, here’s a quick guide to getting started!
Traditional Method
In the traditional way, yerba mate is brewed in a hollow gourd and sipped through a metal straw called a *bombilla*. Here’s a step-by-step on how to prepare it traditionally:
1. Add Yerba Mate: Fill the gourd about halfway with dried yerba mate leaves.
2. Tilt and Shake: Tilt the gourd to let the yerba settle on one side, creating a small mound.
3. Add Warm Water First: Pour a little warm (not hot) water over the leaves to moisten them. This keeps the flavor rich and prevents bitterness.
4. Insert the Bombilla: Place the bombilla in the gourd, angling it down toward the bottom.
5. Pour Hot Water: Gradually add hot water (around 160-180°F or 70-80°C) but avoid boiling water as it can burn the leaves.
6. Sip and Refill: Sip from the bombilla and keep refilling the gourd with hot water as you drink, allowing the same leaves to steep multiple times.
Simple Method with a French Press
For a quicker, convenient brew, you can use a French press:
1. Add Yerba Mate: Place about 1 tablespoon of yerba mate per 8 ounces of water into the French press.
2. Add Hot Water: Pour water that’s below boiling, around 160-180°F, over the leaves.
3. Steep: Let the mate steep for about 5 minutes, depending on your flavor preference.
4. Press and Pour: Press down the plunger and pour your mate into a cup.
Tips for Enjoying Yerba Mate
Yerba mate has a bold, grassy flavor that can be an acquired taste. Try adding honey, lemon, or even a splash of milk if you prefer a milder brew. There are also flavored yerba mate blends available, which can add a twist of mint, citrus, or berry.
Brewing yerba mate is a personal experience, whether you’re sharing from a gourd or sipping solo from a mug. Enjoy experimenting to find the perfect strength and flavor that suits you best. With each sip, you’re part of a tradition that’s as energizing as it is grounding!
